Does using the PWA studio require the theme be built from scratch? Or can you mix?

Just trying to understand how PWA ties in to magento 2 – is a new theme needed to be built from scratch using React? or can you mix and match parts with current theme and build up as you go

(I’m a react developer – magento is brand new to me)
