2.4.2p1 to 2.4.5 – upgrade process practicalities?

We have a Magento 2.4.2p1 site that needs upgrading to 2.4.4 at least, probably 2.4.5. I understand this is a big upgrade involving PHP upgrades and more. I’ve seen posts here that talk about at least 50 hours work, if not 150. We’re a small agency and there is currently only one of me with any experience with Magento. So I’m trying to do a bit of research so I know what’s involved.

Currently we have the live site and a test backup site. I was planning on doing the upgrade on the test site to start with to see how it goes. Then when I have worked out the gotchas, do it on live. However I can’t really afford to spend at least 50 hours, twice! on this. The client also can’t afford to have their site shut down for a week or more. But I’m assuming we can’t just do updates on the test site and then point to live database as I’m sure there will be changes to the database as well? There are a fair few extensions that would need to be upgraded too I’m assuming – some not too vital but some are important in terms of integration with a warehouse etc so can’t be not working on a production site for too long

So how do people usually actually do this – what would be your process for a big upgrade?

Thanks 🙂
